BACKSBERG ESTATE CELLARS...not only a place to avoid the coach loads but a beautiful location with non-pretentious wines. Eco-friendly and carbon neutral since 2006 they have a great garden restaurant serving lamb spit roast and idea for kids.

GROOTE POST...wonderful old farm located off a dirt road up the West Coast towards Darling. This award winery is well worth the drive and you can enjoy Hilda's Kitchen Restaurant in the historical farmhouse with original yellow wood floors and ceilings.

VREDE EN LUST...close to Franshhoek this new winery with spectacular views of the valley is a great place for free wine tasting and lunch. Modern designed country bistro with well stocked deli.

FAIRVIEW...one of South Africa's most successful wineries with its famous goats tower landmark caters for family & kids. With its cheesery, deli and Goatshed Restaurant it became world famous with its "Goats do Roam" label.

MEERLUST...if you like your reds then this one's for you. Try the Rubicon and Merlot in a beautiful setting away from the crowds.

HAUTE CABRIERE...apart from a great variety of wines this cellar is built into the Franshhoek hillside looking back across the valley. The best option it to enjoy lunch in their award winning restaurant and sample their wine pairing menu.

DIEMERFONTEIN WINE & COUNTRY ESTATE...close to Wellington this beautiful farm is a new winery that is producing some memorable reds and you can linger longer and stay in the manor house and cottages overlooking the vineyards.

SIMONSIG WINE ESTATE...a great selection of sparkling wine plus you can taste their cheeses at the same time. Friendly and unpretentious. |
PETER FALKE WINES...with giant cork screws scattered around the beautiful gardens you can enjoy a lazy tasting on large cushions on the lawn. This place mixes the old with the new and has a relaxing yet sophisticated approach. |
LA MOTTE...owned by the renown Rupert's family this world acclaimed wine and vineyard is worth a visit simply to see how the best is made. 1000 tonnes of grapes are processed a year in their modern cellars. |
GRANDE PROVINCE ESTATE...over the last 300 years this place has grown and changed to its present form with a modern restaurant and art gallery. However you can still sit at a small intimate bar and sample some easy drinking wines. |
BOSCHENDAL...although we would not recommend the wine tasting, as it does attract the large tour group crowds, we would say it's worth going for the picnics. You do have to pre-book but you'll be spoilt with their popular food hampers served at tables in the garden with waiter service. The gardens and lawns are expansive so you can chill and enjoy their sparkling wine which we would recommend. |
WARWICK WINE ESTATE...the best vineyard picnic we're had to date! Huge lounge pillows, soft rugs beneath umbrellas and even glass holders spiked into the lawn. You can simply lie back next to the reservoir and enjoy a great choice of food. Unfortunately they don't make Rose but you can pay corkage and bring you own.

DIEU DONNE...this is one of the best locations looking back down across the Franschoek valley to enjoy a wine tasting or their restaurant with breath taking views. |
STEENBERG FARM...highly recommend trying out Bistro Sixteen82 for lunch where you can enjoy their wines in a modern relaxed setting at the foothills of Steenberg Mountain. If you're just going for tasting they have a luxury lounge and bar with great views. |
HEMEL EN AARDE VALLEY...okay this isn't one vineyard but a whole area. If you're heading out towards Hermanus then it's worth driving into this pretty valley (translated as "Heaven & Earth") which has new wines compared to Franchoek and Stellenbosch with spectacular views. Food wise try Newton Johnson's Heaven for breakfast or lunch and La Vierge Restaurant & Champagne Verandah further along the same road. Hermanus Wine Route |
KLEINE ZALZE...this wine estate just outside Stellenbosch encompasses a golf estate and is also home to the much acclaimed Terroir restaurant. Book ahead to enjoy a friendly relaxing meal & wine beneath a large bedouin tent and oak trees. |
DORNIER WINES...beautiful setting, mixing modern and old architecture, this vineyard has a great outdoor restaurant which is kid friendly and very relaxed. |
DELAIRE GRAFF ESTATE...this is one of those places that will blow you away with no expense spared; the owner is the chairman of Graff Diamonds. Amazing location, views and food that's worth treating yourself for a long lazy lunch. |
FRENCH CONNECTION BISTRO...this is an easy going people watching bistro located on the main street in Franschhoek serving good food with a friendly atmosphere. |
SPRINGFIELD ESTATE...this is a small family-owned winery that is perfect to bring your own picnic, sample their easy going wine whilst sitting on the grass enjoying the views with the family dog. |
BOEKENHOUTSKLOOF...located in the furthest and most peaceful part of the Franschhoek wine valley this rejuvenated winery is producing some amazing products such as there easy drinking Porcupine Ridge and very popular Chocolate Block. Free wine tasting.

LYNX WINES...no frills back to basic wine farm that uses traditional open concrete fermentors and a basket press. Great friendly atmosphere with passionate wine growers, lovely Rose.

RICKETY BRIDGE...18th century winery that is one of the most progressive boutique wineries in the Cape. With its own restaurant this is one to put on the list and while away the afternoon or just pop by for a quick sample; free tastings when you buy a bottle.

CHEF'S WAREHOUSE @ MAISON’S...this restaurant is beautifully designed as you would expect from the owners of Weylandt's Furniture. A minimalist white dining area opens onto the beautiful deck and lawns. The food is unpretentious using some own grown ingredients; very popular weekends so book in advance.

VERGELEGEN ESTATE...over 300 years old this beautiful estate offers wine tasting, restaurants, picnics and 17 unique gardens to wander around. Boasting the oldest Oak Tree in South Africa you can just come here to explore the grounds or take in the permanent artwork collections. |
BISTRO 1682...located at Steenberg Farm, the oldest in SA, we have had some amazing lunches here. A modern contemporary winery with tranquil garden and water features. Tapas and bistro style dining accompanied by great wine. |
