Cape Winelands
With so many sites to browse we've saved you time by putting together our own personal recommendations covering travel guides, things to do, eat/drink/dance, further-a-field and recommended accommodation.
Whatever and where-ever you end up we hope you have a great trip!
TULBAGH...further afield, and away from the main winelands tourist drag, the 4th oldest town in South Africa is still very much a hub for all the regions farmers. Don't drive through and miss the original high street; dating back 300 years Church Street is an excellent example of Cape Dutch architecture. Set against the Witzenberg Mountains you can enjoy local produce such as cheese, olives and chocolate...and of course wine! |
FRANSCHHOEK...only a 45 minute drive to the culinary capital of the Western Cape home to 7 of South African's leading restaurants and 43 wine cellars. It is a beautiful setting hemmed in on three sides by mountains and vineyards that makes this our favourite lunchtime spot. franschhoek.org.za/ |
STELLENBOSCH...300 year old oaks line this historic town which is home to South Africa's oldest university and second oldest European settlement. You will need more than a lunchtime to explore this famous wine route and a walking tour gets you acquainted with some of the world's finest example of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture. A car is essential to truly experience some amazing wine yards and great restaurants. |
PAARL...this is one of the Cape Colony's first farming districts and has the longest main street in the country. Definately make a trip to the Afrikaans language monument; walking round feels like you in a 1970's Planet of the Apes set! This town has a lot of charm and the surrounding area you can visit Butterfly World, Snake Centre, Drakenstein Lion Park, Le Bonheur Crodile Park and Paarl Bird Sanctuary. Something we've never done but if you feel like a real treat then try hot-air ballooning. |
